IP Protection Classes

IP Protection Classes
The protection classes outlined in the IP standard EN 60529 describe how devices are protected from the entry of foreign bodies and moisture. The identification is given in a key, which consists of the two letters IP followed by two numbers. The first number indicates the level of protection from dust, the second the level of protection against water.
Many ABUS outdoor cameras feature protection class IP 66 or higher. This makes them absolutely dust-proof and resistant to strong jets of water from different directions, such as heavy rainfall when a strong wind is blowing. This means they can be used for monitoring your premises in unprotected outdoor areas.
The combination of numbers which appear in the following table indicates the respective degree of protection:

First digit: degree of protection from dust

0 No protection
1 Protected from solid foreign objects (50 mm diameter upward)
2 Protected from solid foreign objects (12.5 mm diameter upward)
3 Protected from solid foreign objects (2.5 mm diameter upward)
4 Protected from solid foreign objects (1.0 mm diameter upward)
5 Dust protected
6 Dust tight

Second digit: degree of protection from water

0 No protection
1 Protected from dripping water
2 Protected from dripping water when tilted up to 15°
3 Protected from spraying water
4 Protected from splashing water coming from any direction
5 Protected from water jets (from a nozzle) from any angle
6 Protected from strong jets of water
Protected from immersion up to 1 m for short periods
Protected from immersion beyond 1 m for long periods
